David Kalisek was my divorce attorney. The online portal simplified the financial disclosure process (heads up you pay for that too). David was knowledgable and we settled out of court. The communication was not always stellar and almost always came from the paralegal. I knew going in that I would pay for every email they sent me. So it frustrated me when I would receive an email with only partial information. Do I email back and ask for clarification, knowing I’ll have to pay for another email response? An email might say, “Hi Ms. Newman, attached is the XYZ doc.” Great, what does that document mean? I felt like my paralegal was laxadaisical about my case, mistakenly saying things like “David will send the document most likely by next week” when it was due in two days. They are working multiple cases, but this is my only divorce. It’s expensive, stressful and important. I’d get one of those half-informed emails Friday at 3 and have to wait until mid-morning Monday for clarification. I suppose I had this vision in my mind of my attorney working with me, fighting for my best interest and helping me make informed crucial decisions. Instead, I felt like I hired a paralegal to simplify my paperwork. In my settlement agreement, I had to ask for certain stipulations to be written in to protect myself, and I wish my attorney had been more proactive about suggesting language (or simply writing it in) that would ultimately protect me. I was looking for guidance. Overall, I am happy with my experience but I would do things differently.
