And yet, my accidental encounter with attorney Joseph Fricano did make me alter my generalized views of lawyers. Until I entered Nashua Court building to fight my traffic violation ticket, Joe and I haven’t met or even heard about each other. Due to the Covid situation, exacerbated by my bad luck, it took about 2 years, 2 visits from MA to NH, virtual court session, and a lot of notes of postponement from the Court, before I was called to the final session.I was not trying to question the officer’s reporting accuracy as his findings seemed correct. But I thought that the background information I provide the Judge with would help me convince her that I am not a reckless driver and as such do not deserve the harsh punishment they impose on traffic violators in MA. The Judge indicated that she was sympathetic but her hands were tied since I failed to disprove the “prosecutor’s” aka police officer’s accusation. I said that I didn’t even try to do so as the officer was honest. I felt I had no choice but to submit to the negative judgement and leave the room.“Actually, your honor, that is not exactly correct”, a gentleman from the back of the large courtroom asserted loudly. That turned out to be attorney Joseph Fricano who was waiting for something on a back row. He referred to some Supreme Court’s obscure ruling. The Judge asked him to approach and after some exchange, she informed the room about “The Hollywood-styled change of events” as she put it. She gave Mr. Fricano several days to present the case. Joseph approached me and asked to sign a paper, telling me he takes my case pro-bono and I will be later notified about the final court decision.It took weeks, before I received a letter from the court. I was cleared, on the condition that I don’t commit any new violation during next 12 months. I tried to thank Mr. Fricano for surprising help and he couldn’t even remember what I was talking about. That means his service was totally selfless, without him even thinking about any PR effect. It was me, insisting that he allows me to write somewhere in order to express my gratitude and yes, admiration. I looked in his bio and found out that he previously served as a US marine officer and then a policeman. And he always graduated atop of his class both as an officer and attorney.Thus, in my opinion, Attorney Joseph Fricano impersonates the highest degree of professionalism, sense of justice, bravery, compassion, selflessness, exceptional communicative skills, and all of that is based on diverse life experience.
