I am a landlord of several properties and hired Nelson for a tenant eviction. It was not a smooth interaction. I would not recommend using him because his legal advice is not up to date and current. I noticed other reviewers said that his main concern was being paid upfront and on the spot, I can confirm this. Basically, he does not accept checks but only Zelle and I assume cash. He was clear he needed to be paid in full before he would start work for me. I do acknowledge that once he received his money he did serve the tenant right away. However, after this initial action it’s like he forgot who I was. When nothing further happened for weeks, I called him and he did not remember the case and I had to remind him. It finally took 6 weeks to get a court date on this time sensitive matter. The tenant has then been ordered to leave the property on a certain date and it was confirmed by Nelson that this date is non-negotiable. Surprisingly, the tenant managed to get an extension without Nelson knowing about it. He later admitted that there is a new law out that allows the tenant to get a stay and that he was not aware of this new law. So I took matters into my own hands. Several interventions from my side with the tenant I finally got the squatter out. However, not without paying additional costs for a moving company. I was promised by Nelson that we could negotiate for a partial reimbursement for the poor representation after the case is settled. When I called him he did not want to honor his word by talking about a financial contribution for my additional cost. I had to laugh when he told me he did a great job in this case. Word to the wise, do not use his services for anything you are not treated with importance and in my case he is not up on the new laws. I will never use him again for any other legal services and suggest you don’t either.

Mr. Brinckerhoff is a professional, knowledgeable and wonderful attorney! He will go above and beyond to fight for you! I was being evicted and got no good reason. He fought for my family against a wonderful attorney and won our dismissal. The other side aka landlords side was trying to get around things and not submit pertinent information to the court when filling the eviction paper work. The day I consulted with Mr. Brinckerhoff and at his first glance of my paperwork he noticed that this was done incorrectly! He knows the laws and statutes in Rhode Island through and through and he will fight to uphold said laws, especially if people are trying to go around them. His detainer fee was reasonable and fair! If you are looking for an attorney that will have your best interest and will fight for you attorney Brinckerhoff is the man for the job!

My husband and I hired attorney Brinckerhoff to help us with landlord issues. Our landlord sent us a non legit 5 day demand letter and were making our lives so stressful. We hired Nelson to come to court with us and help handle everything and we are so happy we hired him! He was wonderful and straight to the point and I left court so happy with the results. He knows his stuff and had no issue telling their attorney that they were in the wrong. We will definitely hire him again if we have any other issues!

Critical: Professionalism, ValueI agree with a recent Yelp reviewer who appropriately used the term “shyster”. In terms of his legal advice, I disagreed with some points he made, but overall he seemed like he generally knows what he’s talking about. The reason for my negative review is that he seems to care more about taking your money than anything else.I had originally called into a different law office asking for a free initial consultation and they referred me to Nelson. A day or so later, I received a phone call from him asking if I’d like to setup a consultation appointment. I said sure and arranged to meet with him. Towards the end of our meeting, despite never discussing that he charges for consultations, what his rate is, or that he expects you to pay on the spot, he stated something along the lines of “Just so you know, I don’t do free consultations.” He also said that he thought he might have mentioned this before, although he definitely did not as we only spoke for about 1 minute to arrange the appointment, and I think he probably knows he never mentioned it — whether intentionally or not. Given this omission and the fact that his website said to call for a free consultation (wording since updated), I was kind of surprised when he said, “so, $250 sounds reasonable to you, right?”He then tried hard to get me to pay on the spot, even pushing to see if I had Zelle which I had never used, before eventually agreeing to just hand me an invoice. Subsequently, I received a barrage of emails inquiring if I had sent the check yet, all within a week of being in his office. In one instance, he even emailed me in the evening and subsequently again the following morning around 8am from some sort of different personal email account (if this doesn’t scream shyster, I’m not sure what does). I hadn’t even looked at his former email yet. I waited two weeks before sending his payment, which I don’t think is unreasonably long, but I would have sent it sooner if not for two reasons 1) I knew if I had a simple question related to our consultation visit, he wouldn’t bother answering once he had the check, and 2) I found his tactics and pushiness to be so offputting that I didn’t want to reward that type of behavior. I’m a business school professor and earn a good living, so this was really just about principle.There are a lot of attorneys out there, so save yourself the stress and find another one.I agree with a recent Yelp reviewer who appropriately used the term “shyster”.
