Positive: Professionalism, Quality, ResponsivenessUpdated:This post is 17 years overdue. (2003) I was newly assigned to Fort Bragg. I drove past an unguarded check point (that did not look like the check point as it does today…there was no stop line and no guards there…thus I had no idea I was off post. I was a student only being resident on post for 6 days and went to St Mere Eglise for my first jump with JFKSWC. The MPs on duty were in a shack off to the side sitting on the floor with an air-conditioning unit plugged into a small generator. They panicked when they heard my vehicle drive by and called it in as if I charged the check point.By the time I pulled into the PX parking lot to call my cadre to find out where the rigger shed is located…I was surrounded by 8 MP cars when I looked up and their weapons drawn. Despite being in uniform and already providing my military identification, I was dragged out of my vehicle and thrown on the ground, cuffed and stomped on and injured my shoulders as if I was a terrorist. I was charged with charging a federal check point and dual registration for my vehicle because I still had the plates from Germany on my vehicle and my NC plates had just arrived and were on the front seat of my truck. I spent several hours at the station in a holding cell like a suspect of any major crime. After my chain of command (LTC Boyd) who did not even try to stand up for me because his XO was the spouse of the Provost Marshall, told me to go to Legal to get representation. I found out I had to get my own Lawyer downtown because these were pending federal charges.Somehow prayers and luck led me to Mr Holler as my first law firm that I walked into. Mr Holler took over 2 hours to listen to my situation and without a doubt in his mind, he offered to take my case. I had no idea what lawyers cost, and in more recent days I had to hire a lawyer for my family On the west coast…I knew Mr Hollers had been really good to me but I had no idea how much of a gift he gave me until now. He handed me a document that stated he was taking my case pro bono. I believe Mr Hollers took the case based on the principal of injustice that he saw happening. I remember him asking me if he takes it he would cause the Provost Marshall and Fort Bragg to publicly apologize to me. However at the time, I was not thinking and I asked Mr Hollers just to set the record straight for me and not let it be a public embarrassment for me or my unit because I just wanted to continue my Army career. Mr Hollers complied with my request. It took him 16 months of his time which he never charged me but he won the case, cleared my record and helped me get my clearance restored. I know I thanked him once before but I owe him more than that. I should have made a personal testimony on his behalf much sooner than this. He is a lawyer with great integrity and morals for justice and standing behind his client until the end.Updated:This post is 17 years overdue. (2003) I was newly assigned to Fort Bragg.
