Legal services are provided by attorneys, or paralegals under the direct supervision of an attorney. All assistance provided by the Legal Aid Society of San Bernardino (LASSB) requires an application for legal services and a determination of whether LASSB can help. The decision to provide legal assistance is based on the eligibility of the applicant, the type of legal issue, and LASSB policies, procedures, program priorities, and resources.

I have had to use the San Bernardino legal society several times. The staff has always been professional and very helpful even during Covid when a majority of our interactions had to be over the phone. I first used them to help me fill out my filing for a divorce. I called and left a message which they responded to in a timely fashion. The second time I used them was to help me fill out emergency restraining order paperwork for my whole family. The RO packages are thick and ask for a lot of information which they were amazing in handling. I am a single mother and could not afford an attorney so was very grateful for their services. I don’t know if I could have completed the documentation without their assistance. I am grateful that these services are provided for people who can’t afford it otherwise.

To our surprise we had messed up the paperwork and Michelle Dodd helped us get everything correct. Michelle Dodd is the best person when you’re looking for help and have no idea where to start. She listened to me and answered every question that i asked. As my case got more difficult and the judge asked to changed a few things during the case she got everything ready and even walked with me to the the 2nd floor to help me file the paper work that i needed. In fact, Jasmine shared some vital imformation to me, on how this process work, which was very relevant since this is my first time at the courthouse dealing with such a hardship. I have to share that I have had a very positive experience with this Legal Aid office. The assistant that I initially contacted (he may have moved on), was nothing but respectful, helpful, thorough and paid close attention to detail. That is appreciated when a client is attempting to navigate the legal system on their own and are being beset upon by abusive and aggressive people.

I don’t understand why they still receive funding. The funds should go towards organizations that actually help people on their cases. Attorneys that actually go to court and help their clients pro bono. Especially civil right cases and child custody cases. I’m disappointed
