I had a fantastic experience at USF! I cultivated life long friendships, while also receiving a stellar legal education.

USF’s strong focus on social justice, close-knit sense of community, and emphasis on a practical skills-based legal education provided me with tools I now use to help my clients and their families recover in the face of serious wrongs.

Worst experience of my entire life. First, I will start by saying that this is about the most racist school I’ve ever attended or even heard of. I’m Mexican-American and on the first two days of class I would find a place to sit down just like any other student. I literally had 5 white students look over at me and then get up and move to another seat as far away from me as possible. A few times I was the first to arrive and then I realized that no on would sit next to me. It was the creepiest thing I’d ever seen. It was the same outside of class. I would attempt to join study groups only to have white students literally turn their backs on me and ignore me or give me this seething stare almost as if they were a dog preparing to bite. The faculty is really not much better. As far as sexism is concerned, my Civil Procedure professor could never keep his eyes above my neck. He behaved this way in front of other students and no one seemed to think less of him for it. It was as if everyone viewed his behavior as “just being a guy”. I had never encountered a man who was old enough to be my father behave so horribly and since I couldn’t call him on out his vulgarly I just had to put up with feeling disgusted. It was demeaning and instead of thinking about my studies I had to worry if this professor was going to penetrate me with his eyes or if he was going to make some advancement. He didn’t, but I really didn’t need to go to law school and worry about my professor having crazy fantasies about me when I’m trying to learn the law.. I will say that this law school keeps a very old boy network type of vibe and the faculty does nothing to alter or discourage it. The white male students tend to form cliques. They tend to exclude women and ethnic students unless the woman or ethnic person comes from some sort of well to do family. As for the legal education, it’s made more complicated than it needs to be. It’s as if they lead you in circles and circles in an attempt to confuse you when really the answer is very straight forward. As you read the law books you’ll find that almost all laws hold the premise that women, ethnic people, and the poor are less worthy than white privileged men. It’s especially true in Torts and Criminal Law. While we can’t change the laws in the books we as students and professors can lend at least 10-15 minutes to discuss how those bigoted premises are intwined in the law and how they affect the way the law is applied today. But the professors at USF just don’t care about bigotry in law. They just ignore it and so perpetuate this law school mentality that white men are better than everyone else. Because when they ignore the racist and sexist premises in the law they are by default affirming that white men are just better than women and ethnic people. The students absorb this and so this level of racism and sexism gets played out amongst the students, and then later the legal profession. In sum, USF perpetuates the 1950’s view of legal study. It keeps white men privileged above women and ethnic groups, condones racism and sexism, and makes sure to keep the minds of its students crystalized in this archaic and cruel mentality.
